Love & War

This short video-essay analyzes the manner in which historical cinema draws on the dual themes of love and war. By taking the past as its canvas, cinema can capture the great sweep of history. And just as its characters struggle to forge their own destinies, so too do great forces close in and close off their moral choices. Such events often result in tragedy but often it is just as true that somewhere within the ruins of suffering, there lies an eternal hope. Quoting from over fifty films in less than two minutes, the essay shows how great filmmakers have told great stories that capture the strength of the human spirit.
