Kubrick – Before and After

The influence of Stanley Kubrick is legion. This video-essay positions his works in terms of films that appear to have influenced him (from F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu, William A. Wellman’s The Public Enemy and Max Ophüls’ Letter from an Unknown Woman, to Ingmar Bergman’s The Silence, Andy Warhol’s Vinyl and Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch) and the films that drew inspiration from his work (from David Lynch’s Eraserhead, Ridley Scott’s The Duellists and Martin Scorsese’s Casino, to Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report, Jonathan Glazer’s Birth, and Andrew Stanton’s Wall-E). In addition to Kubrick’s 13 theatrically released feature films, there are references to over seventy other films. Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg as how far Kubrick’s work permeates across cinema.
